6 Ways to make the first day of school special

6 Ways to make the first day of school specialBack to school preparations are in full swing now that the summer school break is coming to and end.

While labeling new clothes and stationery, I am very mindful of the fact that the kids are both anxious and excited for their first day of school.

I know all too well how daunting it can be to start a new school year and that is why I always make a big deal of the first day of school!

Thankfully, both our kids are still attending their old schools as Joshua will be in Grade 3 and Alex her Grade R (her final year of preschool). Despite this familiarity, both our kids are feeling a little bit anxious and have a few worries about school. They are nervous about the idea of losing old classmates and worried about making new friends and whether or not they will like their new class teachers.

In order to give them the encouragement they need to have a great first day of school, here are a few ideas on how we can make it special for them…

Take a back to school picture

Take a picture of your child holding a sign with their grade level and the year. I did this last year with free printables I found on Pinterest and it made the kids feel so proud and special!

Get a new first day of school outfit

Our youngest usually has a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) with all the new supplies we need to get for her big brother so I also get her a new backpack for the new school year.

Write a lunchbox note

Last year I started exchanging lunch box love notes with my son and he said he looked forward to it so much! Alex is still too young to read notes but she can read and write “I love you Anthea/Alex” and that is more than enough of a love note for her!

Have breakfast together as a family

Waking up a bit earlier means we can all have breakfast together as a family to dispel any first-day jitters? I plan to make pancakes as a special treat just for the first day of school so it should be a nice treat!

Decorate the breakfast table with balloons

We all have a stash of left-over birthday balloons in the cupboard so why not decorate the breakfast table! My baby daughter even had a decorated pram as I walked her to school on the first day of kindergarten!

Laminate a small photo to keep in his/her backpack

Brighthorizons.com suggested laminating a small photo of the family, a brother or sister or even of mom and dad to keep in their backpacks for whenever they need to look at a piece of home during the day.

What first day of school traditions do you do with your kids? Do you have anything to add to this list? Will you be using any of these suggestions?
