Albex Bleach

Albex BleachAs a mom of two little kids I am extremely conscious of how exposed my family is to germs in public and I try to create the most germ-free environment for them inside our home.

I used to buy only the most well-known cleaning brands that I know will eradicate the maximum amount of germs with the least amount of effort. However, this year I have been trying to cut down on our budget wherever I can in order to keep up with the rising cost of living.

It’s been a real challenge experimenting with different household cleaners and replacing these well-known and expensive brands with alternative cleaning products that are more cost-effective and can disinfect and clean to my satisfaction.

I don’t see the need to buy a different cleaning product for each room or surface area in our home. My hope was to find one multipurpose cleaning product that was both affordable and that I could use in every room and on any surface as a disinfectant.
It was during this experimental phase that I stumbled upon Albex Bleach. One day while perusing the cleaning products I noticed a plain black bottle and even though it looked unfamiliar and it was priced on the lower spectrum, curiosity made me pick it up and study the label.

Germ Facts#1

I immediately saw that Albex is SABS approved (meaning that it is a registered disinfectant that complies with industry standards of a certain quality and consistency) so on a whim I chucked it into the trolley.

Thus began my love-affair with Albex products…

Albex as an all-purpose cleaner

Since I used that first bottle of Albex, I immediately fell inlove with it’s fresh lemon scent. Not only did it leave a very pleasant scent after cleaning but I found that it also cleaned quite brilliantly!

I did some research online and discovered that Albex is actually a local company that is based right here in Paarden Island in Cape Town and that they have been specializing in anti-bacterial products for the last 50 years.

Albex Bleach

I wondered how I’d never used their products before now and realized it must be because of the packaging. All Albex products are packaged in black bottles and it looks quite inconspicuous amongst all the brightly packaged competitor brands on the shelves. Interestingly enough, they do make mention of this on their website.

Why is Albex Bleach sold in a black bottle?
Albion Chemical Company used to own Perfecto Plastics, who produced the bottles for Albex Bleach. In order to keep the price as low as possible for consumers, Perfecto Plastics would use the most affordable raw material available – regardless of the colour. Thus, in the beginning Albex Bleach used to be packaged in an array of different colours. After shutting down Perfecto Plastics, Albion sourced the most affordable plastic for Albex Bleach, which was black plastic. Albex has been packaged in it’s trademark black plastic since 1976.

I was so blown away by their effectiveness and the well-priced products that I made contact with Albex’s super friendly marketing manager, Shelley Snyman and it was immediately clear that we both shared the belief that Albex products is the city’s best kept secret!

Albex kindly gifted me with a box of their entire range of products so that I could try out all the available fragrances – Lemon, Floral, Lavendar and Regular.

After using them all, I still like the fresh scent of the Lemon-scented products but as a girl, I just love the bright pink labels on the floral range packaging! I find the Lavendar to be more subtle but still very pleasant. If you are sensitive you might prefer the unscented Regular range as the scented products will make your home smell like a rose garden!

The cleaning power of Albex

I wanted to test how effective Albex was so as per the instructions, I sprayed Albex Spray Bleach all over the hard to reach mold in the shower grouting and waited for 5 minutes. When I came back to scrub the shower – the mold had completely disappeared! No scrubbing was required!  All I did was rinse the now mold-free wall. I had the same experience with the ceiling mold.

One day over Easter I popped into my neighbors place and noticed that her kitchen smelt fishy and that she was fighting a losing battle against flies with her citronella candles.

I very subtly said: “Darling, your kitchen smells fishy and the flies are having a party!” She replied that she had been filleting fish and even after cleaning her kitchen she simply could not get rid of the flies. I remembered that she has no sense of smell due to her allergies so probably didn’t even realize that the fishy smell had lingered. So like a good neighbor I fetched my bottle of Albex Lemon-scented spray bleach and offered it to her. After she used it, the flies disappeared within minutes and the only smell that remained was the fresh lemon scent!

I’ve since used every product in their range in each fragrance available with amazing results:

– The Thin bleach I use for disinfecting dishcloths, sponges, cutting boards and other general household items (even toys!).

– The Thick bleach (a gel-like translucent liquid) very effectively cleans my toilets and disinfects the drains.

– The Spray bleach in any of the above fragrances smell amazing and are great for just about any surface or stain removal – mold, wiping down counters, stains, etc. This is my favorite product to keep around the house at all times.
