Mommy Must Haves: Essential tools to survive the Winter

A South African Winter might not be below freezing temperature but it is undeniably cold and rainy! You’ll never hear me complain about the Winter season because I can’t stand excessive heat but I do love the “cosyness” that can only be enjoyed during the long Winter months.

During Winter, staying warm becomes a challenge and feeling good even more so! However if you have the right tools, you can get cosy and get the best out of this cold season.

I’m happy to share all the things that keep us feeling comfortable during Winter and I hope by the end of this post you will share some of your favorite Winter must-haves too!

These are my Winter mommy must haves…

Cold & Flu medication

It’s inevitable that the cold and flu viruses will be doing the rounds at some point or even multiple times during the Winter season.

It’s useful to stock up on the medication before you get hit with the cold & flu germs so it doesn’t catch you off-guard! I realized in writing this that I am completely out of stock but typically you would find this in our medicine supply:

  • Multivitamins
  • Flutex
  • Panado kids syrup or Ponstal
  • Throat lollies

Rain Boots

If your kids are anything like mine they will unable to resist jumping into puddles!

It’s as if a physical force pulls them towards the puddle and then BAM! When I asked Alex “why did you do that??” she replied “‘cos I’m five!”. I finally wised up and got some basic rain boots.

A girlfriend jeans

A versatile pair of jeans can save your life on a work day when there is no dry laundry. If you have a pair of denim jeans in a basic color you can wear it in many different ways by dressing it up or down.

My favorite pair of denims this Winter season are the “Rip and Repair Girlfriend” denims from Exact clothing. It has a cool ripped design but you’ll notice there are no holes, it’s super comfortable and the denim is thick enough to keep the cold out. Check out my full look post here.

A “Warmy Thingie”

Whether you prefer an electric blanket, a hot water bottle or a heater, it’s all essential items to keep warm in the cold. I like the hot water bottle but I don’t allow this for my kids. They each have one of those electric water bottles that you heat up for 15 minutes with electricity and then it stays warm for 2-5hrs. It doesn’t really get as hot as a water bottle but it is a perfect, warm comfort device for the kids to happily go to bed feelings snug underneath their blankets.

If you’re wondering about the name – this is what it’s called in my house – “A Warmy Thingie“!

Board games

download (3)My son got a really nice box of board games as a birthday gift this year and we’ve been whiling away many a cold night just sitting at the table with games of ludo, snakes and ladders, checkers, etc.

The games are simple enough for our five year old to understand and it’s fun for the whole family despite dad’s unethical, cheating ways!

A powerbank

imagesI don’t drive so I Uber everywhere. I can never afford to get stuck without battery power on my phone otherwise I would literally be stuck.

Carrying a fully charged power bank on me at all times ensures that I can access my Uber app anytime.

Red Lipstick

It’s easy to feel drab in the cold weather. With my lips painted bold red I feel as though I’m making a statement that the weather might be dreary but I most certainly am not!

Anthea's Project Life: Wet 'n Wild Stoplight Red Lips

300-2My favorite bold red lipstick at the moment is, Wet ‘n Wild – Stoplight Red.

Wet ‘n Wild is a drugstore brand so it is affordable. This makes it another plus for moms because most of our money goes towards replacing the kids warm clothes from last Winter that we thought would surely last for two seasons but they’d already outgrown.

My knitting

All summer long I anticipate Winter just so I can pick up my knitting needles again and do the crafting that I love the most out of all my other hobbies! I’ve been knitting for the last few years during the Winter months and I really enjoy it so I’m extremely happy that knitting has become so hipster all of a sudden!

I’m currently knitting cool slouchy beanies for my husband and kids and every time I finish one, they want another color so I don’t actually have one for myself yet.

A good book

download (1)It’s simply decadent to snuggle up with a book under the covers on a cold Winter’s night! Few people would disagree!

I prefer to read novels and I am currently reading books by Nora Roberts and I also have “The Book Thief” waiting on the shelf.

  1. […] here in South Africa (especially for a family of four), we still like to treat ourselves during Winter. It’s just turned Spring here but the weather is still cold enough to warrant the splurge. […]

Its so funny that when I was knitting back in the day my kids thought it was so, ‘last season’ but now its apparently ‘a thing’ and looks quite sexy. I must admit that I would rather be out jogging, walking on the beach or watching the waves all warm and snuggled up in the beanie you’re knitting and a warm jacket. THE BEST EVERY!!!! true story

    1. Tracey, how are your kids living without a warmy thingie? You must get them each one! My son got his as a birthday present one year and I thought wow! That’s a cool gift! Alex has her friend, Duncan’s birthday party this weekend and we will be carrying on the tradition!

  9. This Blog made me smile because it reminded me of something I wanted to find out about and had forgotten. That’s ‘Hygge’ a danish word for which there is no English translation – something the Danes use to get through the long winter months so not sure how it would work in South Africa but it seems like a great concept 🙂 Seems to be about creating a state of cosiness, mental well being, candles and company, snuggly blankets, wine.

    1. I am loving the sound of “Hygge”!
