Wheels Day 2015

Wheels Day 2015Goodwoodpark Preschool has a long-standing tradition of hosting an annual fundraiser called “Wheels Day“.

Wheels Day is almost like a sponsored fun walk … but with wheels! All the kids from the school and surrounding areas are invited to participate, dress up and build or decorate absolutely anything with wheels on it for a fun ride and a fun-filled family day!

The parents and kids at the school embraces this event with such enthusiasm that over the years I have spotted more and more eccentric wheels day entries that were built with stolen shopping trolleys, broken lawnmowers, cardboard boxes and many other recycled materials. The best and most innovative “wheels” and costumes win awesome prizes on the day and the winning vehicle usually gets auctioned off.

Behind the scenes

Organizing such a huge event takes a lot of time and effort so the school has a committee of moms, led by the principal, Lize de Jager, who takes care of the sponsorships, crafts, baking and organizing for the event. Right before the event we all got together one evening to prepare the things that will be sold on the day. As you can see it was hard work but we enjoyed it!

On the big day

After staying up late to finish the last of the sweet-filled goodie bags (my monster containers), I was at school with Alexandra to set up our tables by 7am. I was stationed with another mom, Nareema (mom of Alex’s classmate Zarah).

Nareema and I had lots of fun at the cake table. In between photo shoots we sold most of our baked goods!

A cute idea for birthday party snacks!

The sweets table next to us also sold very well with a selection of different and very creative packaging which were mostly made using upcycled materials.

I stocked up on some of these goodie bags for Easter gifts

Fun rides, jumping castles, face painting and games…

Our school fundraisers are always very well supported by the local businesses in our community so we auction off most of the goods to the parents. The auction is always a huge success because of how competitive the dads get.

All the amazing prizes up for auction.

A smashing success!

Wheels Day was blessed with great weather and so far it appears that this year’s event was another huge success! Everyone (young and old) enjoyed the day!

After such a busy day I still had to rush off to get ready and travel out of the city that same afternoon to attend a wedding! But I left in very good spirits after such a fun-filled day.
